Soda Straw Strong Arm


OBJECTIVE

The objective of this event is for a 2-3 person team to construct the longest arm with soda straws, and pins that will support a 100g Mass.



RULES

  • Materials will be supplied at the competition site. Each team will receive 20 plastic (#20) drinking straws and 20 (size #17) straight pins.

  • Construction time is limited to 20 minutes. Testing is allowed during construction.

  • One team member will hold one end of the apparatus while resting his/her elbow the table provided for a steadying support.

  • When the team is ready for testing the 100g mass will be hung at the other end of the "arm."

  • The length of the "straw-arm" will be the horizontal distance from the point of support of hand holding the apparatus to the line of force of the 100g mass.

  • The team with the longest "straw-arm" that is able to support the 100g mass (for at least 10 seconds) is the winner.
